Generic Ubiquiti Handling - first reflash

There are two items you must identify – before you flash the device with Mesh firmware:

1. the version number of the factory firmware (AirOS)

2. The circuit board version (hardware)

Please read the entire page before proceeding . It's helpful to know both identifiers of your Ubiquiti device before performing the initial AREDN flash upgrade.

EXAMPLE

I was asked to take 5 new NanoStations and 2 AirRouter HP, and flash then to AREDN. I read all of them out first and labeled what they contained from the factory:

1. the version number of the factory firmware

  * Log into the factory flashed NanoStation, the login is "ubnt" and the password is "ubnt"

*Click on the System tab; on the next screen there will be a field near the bottom of the page that shows the current factory firmware version. The firmware version will start with either

XM or XW.... followed by a "v" and a series of numbers:

In the above example, the factory firmware version is showing as 5.3.2

If your Ubiquiti device has a factory flash version of 5.5x. or lower.. you are already clear of this hurdle. You can scroll down to "2. there are two circuit board models"

If your Ubiquiti device came with a factory flash version 5.6 or higher…. you will need to roll it back to the 5.5x factory flash first, before loading the Mesh firmware.

Click here to download the older 5.5x XM factory flash file for the NanoStation.

Once you have reflashed back to the 5.5x AirOS firmware, then you can reflash the Mesh firmware file (note, use the Mesh “factory” flash file for this initial jump to Mesh firmware)

If you are having trouble logging into your Ubiquiti device, click here

2. there are two circuit board models

being utilized in NanoStations; called XM and XW (the newest offering).

From the outside, you can not determine which circuitboard your device is using. With the same procedure above, determine if the factory firmware version number

begins with XW or XM. Then choose the flash file (XM or XW) that matches your circuitboard version.

As of June 2016 there is Aredn Mesh flash (firmware) available for the following NanoStation models:

NanoStation NSMx - with XM circuit board: M2, M3, M5

NanoStation NSMx - with XW circuit board: M5 only

Click HERE to go to an AREDN page that shows which platforms are currently supported. Note for the NanoStation (non LOCO) that the M2, M3, and M5 are all supported for the XM circuit board. But for the the XW circuit board variety, only the M5 NanoStation is supported. Take some time and digest what that pages diagram is conveying to you.

"I'm about to purchase a new/used Ubiquiti node on eBay/Amazon. How do I determine which circuit board that particular device has inside - before buying?"
Contact the seller and ask them to report back to you the hardware version (XM or XW). I have always received a response when asking this of the sellers.
